What is Diabetes | Diabetes Complications
What
is diabetes?
Diabetes is a state which happens because of insufficient secretion of insulin
in the body leading to a derangement of carbohydrate metabolism.
In the
human body, there is a gland known as pancreas. It
is situated on the left side
under the liver. Beta cells of this
gland secrete a hormone known as insulin. This substance, insulin, performs the work of controlling the level of glucose in our blood.
Normally in a
healthful person’s body 100ml
of blood consists
of 80 to 120 mg
glucose. When the carbohydrates are
digested and absorbed in the smaller intestine, the level of blood glucose rises.
Insulin then can make this glucose offered
to all the cells of the body. In brief, insulin decreases the level of glucose in the blood. But if sufficient quantity of insulin is not generated or if a resistance to insulin arises in the body, the
level of glucose continues to be high in the blood. This disorder is called diabetes.
